The Brief

The building and its sister building Red Kite House form the entrance to Howbery Park and is the second building to have been delivered from our Masterplan.  We were briefed to design an environmentally sustainable building that could champion the environment and technology business park concept, as well as reflect the operating needs of HR Wallingford.  Accommodating up to 300 HR Wallingford staff across three storey's.

Concept

Our designs for the building, together with its sister building, Red Kite House are curved in plan. Providing suitable impact on entry into the park.The building’s curved form and placement on site creates a northern public entrance courtyard and positions the south façade facing a more private landscape. Our design provides a contemporary working environment with open plan working areas and a number of break out spaces.

The mechanical and electrical plant and equipment were designed and specified to contribute to what is a very energy efficient building. Kestrel House has a mechanical environmental control system which provides excellent carbon performance as defined by the current Building Regulations.

Features

Achieving a BREEAM excellent rating,  Sustainable design measures include external brise soleil shading, a mixed mode environmental control system with openable windows, displacement ventilation and chilled beams fed from on site borehole water sources, a Sustainable Urban Drainage System (SUDS) to landscaping and car parking areas, solar water heating, and provision for greywater harvesting to be retro fitted in the future.

The building won a BCO Regional Award in 2011.
