The Brief

In Down Street Mews we were tasked to redevelop a former Cavalry and Guards’ Club to provide two new town-houses. Located on a restricted site within a mews in Mayfair near to Green Park, our design needed to respond sensitively to the surrounding historic fabric and conservation area.

Concept

The dwellings are clearly identified as translucent, glowing forms amidst the dense urban context. This strikingly contemporary architectural response recalls the Maison de Verre in Paris and provided the concept starting point for our design which also integrates the principles of Japanese shoji screens. Our design incorporates three basement levels with a gym, swimming pool and automated parking system.

Features

The glazed façade is variously transparent and opaque according to the requirements of the spaces within, transforming the scheme from a singular glowing element by day, to a luminescent box as evening falls. Our design integrates sustainable solutions including ground-source heat pumps, bio-diverse roofs and generous floor to ceiling heights.
