The Brief

This major site within the town centre has stood vacant for a decade since the demolishment of the former British Gas (Centrica) HQ building. We were briefed to develop designs for a mixed-use residential, office and retail scheme that would be implementable and deliverable.

Concept

Our concept draws on the site’s position amongst the historic waterways that once fed the nearby river Thames, now reclaimed by land. We have positioned the buildings as islands within a riparian landscape, accessible to the wider public. New routes and connections have been created into the adjacent townscape along the original lines of these rivers and streams.

Features

We have created 475 homes across six buildings, these are organised to maximise views and daylight into the central public space. The public space is connected to the main London Road frontage between active, dynamic uses, whilst our design for a tall central element provides a legible marker for the wider approach routes.
