Southampton City Centre Masterplan

David Lock Associates (on behalf of Southampton City Council)

The Southampton city centre masterplan aims to give Southampton a 'worldwide profile and reputation as a waterfront city', and steer its sustainable growth over the next 16 years. The brief was to explore how the reinvigoration of the station quarter could act as a catalyst for the regeneration of the wider city. Having identified that Southampton train station, with its existing substation and warehouse retail buildings, does not integrate with the city centre to the south east, and lacks quality civic space, the proposed strategy reshapes and encloses the station square buildings, to create a better quality public realm and a sense of arrival in Southampton, creating a ‘gateway’ that connects the port with the city centre
