Istanbul New Airport
The practice is the lead designer for the terminal building at Istanbul New Airport. Based on the Black Sea coast 35km outside the city, it will be the largest single terminal in the world with an initial capacity of 90 million passengers per year. Phase 1 will see the construction of the terminal together with three runways and substantial aviation related development. Further phases envisage additional runways, terminals and satellite piers, and will increase the airport capacity to 180 million passengers. As the lead designer, Scott Brownrigg has revisited the concept design originally prepared by Grimshaw, Nordic and Haptic, refining and developing it to suit the evolving requirements of the client including architectural planning, aesthetics, operational issues and buildability. Delivery architects on the scheme are Fonksiyon (central processor and the external envelope) and TAM/Kiklop (piers). Construction is scheduled to complete in 2018.
