50 Grosvenor Hill, London
Grosvenor West End Properties Ltd
This scheme involved the sensitive redevelopment of a city block including new and retained elements, for productive use. The practice was appointed to provide architectural services including novation to the main contractor after stage E to completion, as well as compliance monitoring on behalf of the client, Grosvenor. The significant design challenges were to integrate the elements worthy of retention and to preserve the scale and variety of the existing streetscape. This involved finding a commonality, both in plan and section, for what were originally eleven separate buildings and, internally, to achieve a degree of modular consistency as expected of contemporary office space. These challenges were resolved in a positive way, with a 1.5m grid and a 3.85m floor-to-floor height, which effectively ties old and new together into a unified four-storey building. The building has achieved BREEAM Excellent. 50 Grosvenor Hill was named London and the South East's Best Commercial Workplace under 2,000 sq m at the 2013 British Council for Offices Regional Awards.
