New inclusive free school in Stratford - School21 receives planning approval

05.12.12

Scott Brownrigg Planning has secured planning permission for School 21, a new inclusive free school for pupils between the ages of 4 and 18 located in Stratford within in the London Borough of Newham.

Working with project architects AStudio on behalf of client the Leadbitter Group the approved proposal involves the extension and remodelling of existing buildings previously occupied by Rokeby boy’s school.

The approval allows for the existing buildings to be stripped back to their concrete frame and the addition of a two-storey extension, together with the filling in of internal courtyards to create large break out spaces and the re-cladding of the buildings with white rendered panels, full height glazed panels and timber louvres.  The approval also allows for the erection of a new sports facilities building and three court multi use games area that will both benefit from community use; a comprehensive landscaping scheme will significantly enhance the appearance of the site.

The quality of the architecture was a key issue for both Astudio and the London Borough of Newham and extensive negotiation and collaborative working with all parties ensured that the approved scheme will be a valuable asset for both the school and the local community.

The approval ensures that the buildings will be brought back into use for a valuable education and community use after laying vacant for a number of years.
